Object #20 / Arnold Schönberg: Pelleas and Melisande, op. 5

Symphonic poem for orchestra
based on a play by Maurice Maeterlinck
Sketch
1902–3

Arnold Schönberg Center, Wien

Maurice Maeterlinck's five-act drama follows a chain of situations, which line up in associative fashion as artificial encounters. Schönberg concentrates his interpretation on the characters Golo, Melisande and Pelleas, and their fateful relationship in an indefinite, placeless, and timeless world. Thematic thoughts, characteristic to individual scenes or persons, form the building-blocks of a symphonic development, which has its beginning in the forest scene (Golo meets Melisande).
